How to Properly Brush Your Teeth

Practicing an excellent oral hygiene routine is one of the best preventive measures a patient can take. A large part of dentistry is preventive care. Patients can practice preventive care at home as well as during routine comprehensive exams. Virginia Beach family dentist Dr. Brent Moses focuses on providing compassionate, patient-focused dental care.

Brushing The Right Way

Brushing your teeth is something you do every day, so it is important that you are doing it the right way to reap all the benefits. Brushing and flossing regularly is one of the best ways to keep your teeth protected from cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Things to consider:

  • Make sure you are brushing your teeth for at least two minutes during each session. To reap the full benefits of brushing your teeth, it is important to brush for a minimum of two minutes.
  • Look for ADA approved dental products.  ADA approved dental products have undergone the appropriate tests to ensure they are qualified to help improve your oral health.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. If the bristles on your toothbrush are not intact, your toothbrush isn’t as effective in cleaning your smile. You can pick which kind of toothbrush is right for you. Patients have the option of choosing a soft, medium, or hard bristled toothbrush.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Most people brush their teeth in the morning but don’t brush their teeth after dinner. When you sleep, the bacteria and debris in your mouth can stick to your teeth while you sleep. It is important to properly remove harmful bacteria and debris from the mouth before going to bed.
