For Dental Patients in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Your First Dental Visit

On or before your first visit, please provide us with:

  • A valid form of identification
  • Recent X-rays and dental records
  • List of medications and medical history
  • Dental insurance card or information

When you visit our office, we provide dental cleaning, screening, and examination.

At your dental cleaning, your hygienist will first use a dental mirror and a small probe to look for signs of gum disease. Then, your hygienist will use a scaler to remove bacterial buildup from your teeth and gum line. Next, your hygienist uses a toothbrush and gritty toothpaste to polish the teeth. Your hygienist will floss and rinse your mouth.

We will also take dental X-rays as needed. Our X-rays can take detailed photos of your teeth, gums, jaw, and nerves. With X-rays, we can discover new dental problems and create custom-made treatment plans.

We also screen patients for problems like oral cancer, which has a high rate of survival.

Signs of oral cancer that we look for include:

  • Bleeding sores
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
  • Tongue numbness
  • Ear pain
  • Red or white patches in the mouth

Our team will examine your lymph nodes, throat, tongue, and other parts of your mouth. We will also screen for gum disease or periodontitis and use a tool to measure your gum pockets before your cleaning.

Symptoms of gum disease may include:

  • Red or purple gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Gum recession
  • Loose teeth

Oral cancer and gum disease are common yet complex oral health problems that worsen over time. Regular dental visits allow our dentists to find signs of these issues early to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums.

Why Choose Our Office?

At Coastal General Dentistry, we’re here to help you and your family get high-quality care.

  • Experience and Expertise: Our dentists have years of combined experience in dentistry. They continue their education to keep up with advances in dental care for the best care possible.
  • Modern Technology: As a modern dental practice, we use the latest technology to make diagnosing and treating patients properly easier than ever. Our office also uses quiet electric handpieces that minimize sensitivity.
  • Services: General dental care is the foundation of our practice. Healthy teeth and gums are essential before you can treat any other restorative or cosmetic issues.
  • Personalized Care: Our office will work with you to customize treatment to your dental needs. Before treatment, we always ensure your options fit your goals and budget. We also consider your medications, medical history, and allergies.
  • Accessibility: We are conveniently located off First Colonial Road. Our office sees patients in the Virginia Beach community and surrounding areas.

New Patient FAQs

Read the answers to popular questions our patients have about our Virginia Beach, VA, dentist office and their care:

Is your office accepting new patients?

Yes, Coastal General Dentistry accepts new patients. If you want to make an appointment, please call 757-216-9914. You may also schedule a dental visit with our dentists on our website.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept dental insurance and payment plans. Our team will work with you to determine which services are covered by insurance. We also accept CareCredit, which allows patients to pay in installments. Most insurance companies will cover routine care, which includes cleanings.

How often should I visit the dentist?

We recommend that our patients visit our office biannually or twice a year. Routine dental cleanings help prevent plaque and tartar buildup in the mouth. Plaque is a bacterial film that forms tartar when hardened. Tartar removal is difficult for patients to do on their own. Because of this, we encourage patients to visit for dental cleaning treatment.

Our office also provides exams at regular dental visits. These exams help us find tooth and gum problems early.

Do you offer family dental care?

Yes, we offer family dental treatment in our Virginia Beach office. Our pediatric dental care helps create a healthy foundation for our younger patients.

At routine visits, we offer fluoride treatment and sealants for children. In addition, we can offer extractions, root canal treatment, or fillings for older patients to prevent various dental problems.

What do I do if I have tooth pain or sensitivity?

Toothaches or sensitivity have multiple causes. Patients with worn teeth may experience more sensitivity. Additionally, patients may have tooth decay or a dental infection.

Patients may also be sensitive to hydrogen peroxide in toothpaste. If you have chronic or sudden pain, please contact our office. We will create a treatment plan based on your symptoms and dental needs.

How can I get pain-free dental care?

If you have a fear of pain, we offer local anesthetic and sedation. We can numb your mouth or the treated part of your mouth before your care. If you have a complex treatment or anxiety, we will recommend sedation.

Under sedation, you will feel relaxed. While you may feel sensations, you will not feel pain. Sedation offers a safe option for lengthy treatment.
