Let’s be honest for a minute. Walking into a dental office isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. For some folks, just reading the word “dentist” can make their palms a little sweaty. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. The important part is not letting it stand in the way of a healthy smile.
At Coastal General Dentistry in Virginia Beach, VA, we have spent over a decade helping patients just like you feel comfortable, informed, and at ease. We thought it might help to name the three biggest fears we hear and explain exactly how we handle them.

Fear #1: “It’s Going to Hurt”
This is the big one. Maybe you had a rough experience years ago. Maybe you have just heard too many stories from friends or family. Either way, the fear of pain keeps many people away from the dentist. The truth is, dentistry has changed a lot.
Modern numbing agents are incredibly effective. We use them carefully to make sure you are truly comfortable before we begin any procedure. For many treatments, you will feel pressure or vibration, but not sharp pain. And if you are nervous about the needle itself, just let us know. We have gentle techniques for that, too. Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Willinger take extra care to make every injection as comfortable as possible.
For patients who need extra help relaxing, we offer several sedation options.
- Nitrous oxide is sometimes called laughing gas. It takes the edge off while you stay awake and aware. The effects wear off quickly, so you can drive yourself home after your appointment.
- Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before your visit. You will feel deeply relaxed but still able to respond to our team. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
- IV sedation is available for longer or more complex procedures. This option helps you feel completely at ease, and many patients remember very little about their treatment afterward.
We will walk you through every option and find what works best for you. Our goal is simple: you should feel comfortable and safe throughout your entire visit.
Fear #2: “I Don’t Know What’s Happening”
Have you ever sat in a chair while people talk over you and poke around your mouth with metal instruments, having no clue what they are actually doing? Yeah, that feeling is unsettling. It can make you feel powerless and anxious.
Our approach is the exact opposite.
Before we do anything, we explain it. We show you. Your dentists in Virginia Beach take time to understand your goals and talk through your options. You will never feel like you are just along for the ride.
If you want to see your X-rays, we will pull them up on the screen and walk you through what we see. If you want to know why we are recommending a certain treatment, we will break it down in plain, simple language. We will tell you what the procedure involves, how long it will take, what you will feel, and what to expect afterward.
You are part of the conversation. You aren’t just a patient being worked on. You are a partner in your own care.
This transparency builds trust. And trust is the foundation of every great patient-dentist relationship. Dr. Cappy Sinclair brings a unique perspective to this approach. He began his career as an art conservator, restoring damaged paintings and sculptures for museums. He understands the value of precision, patience, and careful communication. He applies those same principles to every patient he treats.
Fear #3: “I’ll Be Judged for My Teeth”
This one breaks our hearts because we hear it so often. People come in apologizing. “I know I should have come sooner.” “I haven’t taken great care of them.” “I’m embarrassed about the shape they are in.”
Please hear this: We aren’t here to judge you.
We are here to help you. Every single person’s mouth tells a different story. Yours is unique to you. Our role is to partner with you for a healthier, more confident future. Whether you need a simple dental cleaning or more involved restorative care, you will be met with kindness, not lectures.
Dr. Mark Reichley understands this better than most. He served for four years as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy, completing humanitarian deployments to Central America, West Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Baltic Sea. He has treated patients from all walks of life, in all kinds of circumstances. He knows that every patient deserves compassionate, nonjudgmental care. That is exactly what he brings to our Virginia Beach office every day.
Dr. Clayton Willinger shares this commitment. He completed advanced training at the Kois Center, focusing on the latest scientific advancements in restorative and implant dentistry. He works closely with each patient to address their unique needs without making them feel rushed or uncomfortable.
Our entire team, from the front desk to the hygienists, is trained to create a welcoming, supportive environment. You are more than a patient here. You are part of our Coastal family.
More Than Just Treating Teeth
Your oral health is connected to your overall health. Untreated dental problems can contribute to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes complications, and even stroke. When fear keeps you from the dentist, your whole body suffers.
We understand that overcoming dental anxiety takes courage. You are choosing to prioritize your health, even though it feels scary. That takes strength, and we respect it.
A Gentle Place to Start
If anxiety has kept you away, we get it. But you don’t have to tackle it alone.
Start with a conversation. Call us at 757-216-9914 and tell us what worries you. We will listen without judgment. We will answer your questions. And we will help you create a treatment plan that feels right for you, at a pace you are comfortable with.

What to Expect at Your First Visit
If you decide to come in, here is what you can expect:
- A warm welcome. Our front desk team, including Alicia, will greet you with a smile. We will check you in quickly and make sure you feel comfortable.
- A conversation about your concerns. We will ask about your dental history, your goals, and any fears you have. We want to understand your perspective so we can tailor your care accordingly.
- A gentle exam. Dr. Sinclair or another member of our team will examine your teeth and gums. We may take digital X-rays to get a complete picture of your oral health. Digital X-rays use very low radiation and are completely safe.
- A clear plan. We will explain what we found and walk you through your options. We will also provide a clear cost estimate before any treatment begins.
- Treatment on your terms. You decide when to begin. We never pressure you into procedures you aren’t ready for.
We Accept Most Dental Insurance Plans
We believe cost should never be a barrier to quality care. We accept most PPO dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, MetLife, United Concordia, Anthem, and Cigna. We also offer flexible financing through Cherry with low- or no-interest options. Our team will review your coverage and help you understand your benefits before any treatment begins.
