Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Severe Toothache or Tooth Pain
Do you have persistent, throbbing pain that won’t go away? Maybe it’s sharp when you bite down, or a dull ache that’s been building for days.
Toothaches can signal many issues like deep decay, infection, abscess, cracked tooth, or damaged filling. Sometimes what feels like a toothache is actually gum disease or even sinus congestion.
Dr. Reichley will examine your tooth, take digital X-rays if needed, and determine the cause. Treatment might range from a simple filling to root canal therapy if infection has reached the pulp. Most importantly, we’ll get you out of pain the same day.
Knocked-Out Tooth
This is a true dental emergency. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, your chances of saving it are highest within the first 30-60 minutes.
What to do immediately:
- Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), but never touch the root
- Gently rinse with cold water if dirty, but don’t scrub or remove tissue fragments
- Try to reinsert it into the socket, holding it in place with gentle pressure or biting down softly
If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep it moist by:
- Placing it inside your cheek (between teeth and cheek)
- Putting it in a container of milk
- Using a tooth preservation kit if available
- Storing it in saline solution
- Avoid storing in plain water because it damages the root cells
Call us immediately at 757-216-9914. Dr. Reichley’s implant training makes him exceptionally skilled at reattachment and, if necessary, replacement.
Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Tooth
Do you notice a visible crack, a piece of tooth missing, or sharp edges irritating your tongue? Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there’s bleeding, apply gentle pressure with sterile gauze. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
The treatment depends on the severity. We can repair small chips with cosmetic bonding. Deeper cracks will need a crown. If the crack extends into the pulp, root canal therapy may be needed. Dr. Reichley will assess and recommend the best path to save your tooth.
Lost or Broken Filling or Crown
Has a filling fallen out, or your crown has come loose or broken? Don’t try to fix it yourself with super glue or over-the-counter repair kits. These can damage your tooth and complicate treatment. If you’re in pain, a temporary dental filling material from the pharmacy can provide short-term relief until you see us.
We’ll examine the tooth, clean the area, and place a proper permanent restoration. If you still have the crown, bring it with you. We may be able to re-cement it.
Object Stuck Between Teeth
Is something lodged between teeth that flossing won’t remove? Gently try dental floss, taking care not to snap it forcefully into your gums. If that doesn’t work, don’t use sharp objects (pins, paperclips, etc.) because you can damage your tooth or gums.
Call us soon. We’ll safely remove the object and check for any damage to the tooth or surrounding tissue.
Abscess or Severe Infection
Do you have severe and persistent pain, swelling in your face or jaw, fever, a pimple-like bump on your gums, and foul taste in your mouth? This is serious. Dental infections don’t resolve on their own and can spread to other parts of your body. If you have swelling that’s making it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the emergency room immediately.
If caught early, we’ll drain the infection, prescribe antibiotics, and treat the underlying cause. We can provide root canal therapy or an extraction. Getting care quickly can stop infections from spreading and prevent further damage to your teeth.
Bleeding After Oral Surgery
Do you have bleeding that continues for days after a procedure, even with gauze pressure? Apply firm pressure with clean, moist gauze for 30-60 minutes. Avoid spitting, using straws, or vigorous rinsing.
Call us immediately. Prolonged bleeding can indicate a complication that needs professional attention.
Bitten Tongue or Lip
Did you injure your tongue, lip, or cheek from a fall, accident, or even while eating? Clean the area gently with a wet cloth. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If bleeding is heavy or won’t stop after 15 minutes of pressure, call us at 757-216-9914.
Emergency Dentistry FAQs
When should I go to the emergency room instead of the dentist?
Go to the ER if you have:
- Severe facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing
- Suspected broken jaw or facial bones
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Head injury or loss of consciousness
- High fever accompanying dental pain
Once you’re stabilized, call us for follow-up dental care. Emergency follow-up care can stop more serious problems from happening. We’re here for you.
How can I manage pain before my appointment?
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen (follow package directions)
- Cold compress on the outside of your cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off)
- Salt water rinse (1/2 teaspoon salt in warm water) to reduce inflammation and clean the area
- Clove oil, a natural numbing agent, applied directly to the affected tooth with a cotton swab
- Elevate your head when lying down to reduce blood flow and throbbing
Will you see me on the same day I call?
Yes. We prioritize emergency patients and will make every effort to see you the same day you call. Just phone 757-216-9914 and let us know you’re experiencing an emergency.

What if my emergency happens after hours?
Call our office number anyway. Our voicemail provides instructions for reaching us. For life-threatening emergencies, always call 911 or go to the nearest ER.
Does dental insurance cover emergency visits?
Most dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and necessary treatment, though coverage levels vary. Our front office team will verify your benefits and explain costs before treatment. We also offer flexible financing options for patients without insurance.
I’m terrified of dental visits, even in an emergency. Can you help?
Absolutely. Dental anxiety is common, and we’re experienced at helping nervous patients through emergencies. Dr. Reichley and our team will:
- Explain every step before we begin
- Move at whatever pace feels comfortable
- Offer sedation options for procedures that cause anxiety
You’re not alone, and you’ll never be judged.
What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?
Stay calm, your child takes cues from you. For knocked-out baby teeth, do not attempt to reimplant them. It can damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Call us immediately, and we’ll guide you through next steps while comforting your little one.
