Bad Breath: When It’s Just Garlic and When It’s Something More

You know the moment. You’re talking with someone, and they step back, just slightly. Or you catch a whiff of your own breath after lunch and immediately reach for a mint. Bad breath happens to everyone. But sometimes it lingers. And when it does, it’s worth asking why.

At Coastal General Dentistry, we hear about bad breath more often than you might think. Some cases are temporary and harmless. Others are a signal that something in your mouth or body needs attention. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Bad Breath: When It's Something More in Virginia Beach, VA

The Everyday Causes of Bad Breath

Most bad breath, or halitosis, starts in the mouth and clears up on its own. The usual suspects include:

  • Strong foods: Garlic, onions, and spices leave behind compounds that enter your bloodstream, travel to your lungs, and linger on your breath for hours, sometimes until the next day. No amount of brushing fixes that. You just have to wait it out.
  • Morning breath: Saliva production slows while you sleep, so bacteria multiply overnight. That’s why your breath is worst right when you wake up.
  • Coffee and alcohol: Both dry out your mouth, and less saliva means less to wash away bacteria.
  • Smoking: Tobacco causes its own distinct odor and also contributes to gum disease, which worsens breath over time.

If your breath improves after brushing, flossing, and drinking water, you’re likely dealing with the everyday variety. Nothing to worry about.

When It’s More Than That

Persistent bad breath that doesn’t go away with good hygiene is a different story. Here are the common culprits we look for:

  • Gum disease: This is the most common cause. Bacteria that cause gum disease live in the pockets between your teeth and gums and produce sulfur compounds with a distinct odor. If your gums bleed when you brush or look red and puffy, get checked.
  • Cavities and decay: A cavity is a hiding place for bacteria and trapped food. The decay itself has an odor. Often, patients don’t feel pain from a cavity until it’s deep, so bad breath can be the first clue.
  • Dry mouth: Saliva is your mouth’s natural cleaning system. Certain medications, medical conditions, and even mouth breathing can reduce saliva flow. Without enough saliva, bacteria thrive, and breath suffers.
  • Tonsil stones: These small, white clumps form in the crevices of your tonsils and can have a strong smell. They’re harmless but annoying, and some people can see them with a flashlight.
  • Acid reflux and other conditions: Sometimes the problem isn’t the mouth at all. Reflux, sinus infections, and certain systemic conditions can affect breath. If your Virginia Beach dentist rules out dental causes, see your doctor.

The Simple Test

Not sure which category you fall into? Try this: Brush and floss thoroughly, scrape your tongue, and drink a glass of water. Wait about an hour, then check your breath by licking the inside of your wrist, letting it dry, and sniffing.

If your breath is fine, great. If it’s still off, especially if the smell sticks around day after day, book a visit.

What Helps

For everyday breath, the basics work well: brush twice a day, floss daily, clean your tongue, stay hydrated, and chew sugar-free gum to keep saliva flowing.

For persistent bad breath, the fix depends on the cause. Treating gum disease, filling a cavity, adjusting medication, or getting a thorough professional cleaning can make a real difference. Mouthwash alone won’t solve a problem that starts in a pocket between two teeth.

Don’t Just Mask It

Mints and mouthwash are fine for a quick fix. But if you’ve been relying on them for months, it’s worth finding out what’s underneath. Bad breath that hangs around is often your mouth’s way of telling you something needs attention.
